Road safety for children (continuation)! On 15 September 2011, the Automobile Club of Moldova has carried out a road safety action dedicated to children, within the “Make Roads Safe” campaign. Thus, the ACM in partnership with the Road Police organized another “prevention” event, in order to protect the most vulnerable road users - children (see www.saferoads.md)
According to data provided by the Road Police, the biggest part of road crashes consists in pedestrian collisions (38, 2%). Thus, from the beginning of 2011, more than 600 road accidents were registered on Moldovan roads, in the result of which 70 people died. Every 13th road crash occurs because of pedestrians’ fault.
The statistics on road accidents involving children are a tragedy too. In the first half of 2011 there were 245 road crashes involving children, in result of which 11of them died and other 266 were seriously injured.
When school time starts, the risk of accidents involving children increases, so, for this reason the ACM team realized a control on road signs and road markings near the educational institutions and detected many places with total lack of necessary signs, where the children flow is very intense.
In this order, within the “Road Safety for Children” action, the ACM in partnership with the Road Police and volunteers (teachers and pupils) from the “Chiril şi Metodiu” Lyceum (Chisinau) “designed” a pedestrian crossing near this school, because it was missing, although very much people are crossing this street everyday. Trough this small flash-mob we tried to call the responsible authorities to take necessary measures in order to avoid this kind of “omissions”.
Also, the ACM representatives have carried out some informative lessons for pupils from this Lyceum and discussed the current issues of road safety in Moldova. The lessons were held successfully and revealed a very important fact - that children know the traffic rules and are very disturbed because the injustices that they meet on their way home.
During this action, there were distributed thematic brochures with relevant information on road safety for pedestrians. Younger pupils received the “ABC for little pedestrian” and else ones got the “10 Tips to survive on the road” brochures. Teachers are very grateful for these gifts, because this kind of material is missing in schools.
Pupils, their teachers and the ACM team hope that authorities will not remain indifferent to our call!
